What’s your biggest challenge in managing a global team?

What is DEIB?

DEIB

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) is a framework that encourages a community where all groups experience equal opportunity, a sense of inclusiveness, and psychological safety to be authentic.

The term DEIB is commonly used to describe ways in which organizations portray, build, and foster their internal and external cultures to allow all groups to be represented in their organization regardless of, for example:

  • national origin
  • language
  • race
  • color
  • disability
  • ethnicity
  • gender
  • age
  • religion
  • sexual orientation
  • gender identity
  • socioeconomic status
  • veteran status
  • family structure

Diversity

“Diversity” refers to differences between people in a setting (teams, company, industry, etc.) which is expressed in many forms, including (but not limited to) race and ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, language, culture, national origin, religious commitments, age, family status, (dis)ability status, and political perspective.

Equity

“Equity” speaks to systems that are fair and impartial, taking into account circumstances and perspectives between different groups of people. It means ensuring equal opportunity so that everyone has access to equal outcomes.

Inclusion

“Inclusion” is about creating a welcoming environment where you experience the psychological safety to be yourself genuinely. Everyone feels safe speaking up and is empowered to do so. You feel seen, heard, empowered, and appreciated.

Belonging

“Belonging" is the feeling of security and support one gets when there is a sense of acceptance, inclusion, and identity for a member of a certain group or place.

When companies create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment, they're creating the conditions for belonging.

How do companies apply the DEIB framework?

Companies often apply the DEIB framework when they build out their organization’s strategy to guide how they interact with, hire, and manage their people. It can also help companies to track how they perform in attracting, engaging, and retaining their diverse talent within all groups.
